Mindlessly munching your day away because you have nothing better to do is not only a bad habit, but can contribute to poor health and weight gain. Here are my top tips to beat boredom snacking.
Are you guilty of mindlessly snacking when you’re bored or lonely?
I know I am! Many of my lazy Sundays are spent sprawled out on the couch, Netflix surfing, with a bag of chips in hand. Meanwhile the laundry, cleaning, and other abundance of chores go untouched. If I’m a little more motivated, I’ll wander the house in search of a project to tackle only to end up in the kitchen taking on the pantry instead. This is not due to the fact that I am hungry, It’s just something to do to fill the boredom. As a result, once I have reflected on my day, I realize I consumed 100s of un-needed calories.
Constant snacking is one of the easiest ways to blow your calorie count for the entire day!
Here are my top tips to Beat Boredom Snacking.
Find something to do:
I know this is an obvious one, and I’m guilty of ignoring it myself. Try and find a project to get lost in or call a friend. Keeping yourself busy takes your mind of food. Sometimes it helps to get of the house. As a result the food isn’t there for you to fall back on. You could take a walk or bike ride. Head to the mall and walk around inside if the weather is poor. The Point being to occupy your mind and body in some way.
Keep your hands busy
If you do decide to perch yourself on the couch, do something with your hands. Knit, strum the guitar, heck play with play dough, it doesn’t matter. Keeping your hands occupied makes it hard to use them to shove food in your face.
- Chewing gum or sucking on Tic-Tacs keeps your mouth busy. In addition, the minty taste deters you from sweets.
Brush your teeth
Brushing your teeth leaves a minty clean feel in your mouth, making you less likely to want to eat.
Eating something sour and vinegary can help take away a craving for sweets. Sauerkraut is also a great option. Plus these foods are low in calories and not something you generally end up eating large amounts of.
Coffee or Tea
Sipping coffee or tea is a great way to give your mouth something to do without adding calories. Just don’t add a crapload of cream and sugar. As a bonus, Coffee is an appetite suppressant.
Keep a tub of jello in the fridge for snack busting emergency. You can eat massive amounts for minimal calories. As a result you feel satisfied and full without ruining your healthy eating.
No, I don’t mean a bottle of wine. Constantly sipping on water or another calorie free beverage makes you feel full. This way you won’t think of snacking.
Go to bed
Is night-time snacking your kryptonite? Pack it in early and head to bed…….Hold on, let me be more specific, put down the bowl of ice cream, walk away from the chips, and now go into your room to sleep. Everyone can benefit form a little more sleep so turning in early cuts out needles snacking and gets you more beauty rest.
